LIHUE — With spring break just around the corner, Mokihana Aquatics announced its Spring Learn to Swim classes.
“The county offers learn to swim classes during the summer,” said Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando “O” Anaya. “Mokihana Aquatics and the YMCA of Kauai are the only groups which offer learn to swim classes year-round.”
The spring break class runs from March 17-21 at the Kauai High School pool. Classes are available for kids of all ages.
Classes are 30 minutes in length and will be offered between 1:30 to 2 p.m., and 2 to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“I learned to swim from summer school,” said Samantha Stokes, 11, a Mokihana junior leader. “People should learn to swim because it’s fun and is really good exercise.”
Junior leaders are certified by Anaya and the Mokihana Aquatics leaders and assist with the Learn to Swim classes, providing more personalized instruction.
In addition to teaching youth how to swim, junior leaders are learning leadership and teaching skills, Anaya said. The self-confidence level of these junior leaders is greatly enhanced because of the responsibility given them through this teaching experience.
“I was afraid of drowning,” said Kawehi Tamashiro, 13, of her Learn to Swim experience. “My mother wanted me to learn to swim so I wouldn’t drown. Swimming is fun, good exercise, and something we need to know because we are surrounded by water.”
Alana Cayabyab, 10, is another of the Mokihana junior leaders.
“The intent with Alana learning to swim was to keep her active year-round,” said Tony Cayabyab, Alana’s father.
John Inouye, the father of Chloe Inouye, one of three Mokihana swimmers who will be in Hilo for a regional tournament this weekend, said swimming with Anaya offers more than just instruction in the water.
“Being around coach O, he teaches kids about life lessons,” Inouye said. “I never had an opportunity like this when I was younger because my parents were always working. I’m trying to give Chloe the things I never had at her age.”
