LIHUE — The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative Charitable Foundation released $10,000 to Kauai Economic Opportunity on Monday.
The funds are for KEO to help qualified, low-income electricity users with their electric bills.
Interested Kauai residents can call KEO at 245-4077 to see if they qualify or to apply for help.
“To date, a total of $130,000 has been donated to KEO to help those who need assistance with their electricity bills,” said Alan Smith, president of the KIUC Charitable Foundation. “We are hoping that these additional funds will continue to help those in need.”
The KIUC Charitable Foundation started the program in September 2008 with a $50,000 contribution, a KIUC press release stated.
Governor Linda Lingle in 2005 signed legislation enabling KIUC to keep and use for charitable purposes unclaimed refunds which would have previously been turned over to the state for its use.
None of the funds used for the KEO emergency assistance program come from KIUC assets.
The KIUC Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization governed by nine directors: three KIUC directors, three KIUC employees, and three KIUC members.
