LIHUE — A state Department of Transportation contractor will be conducting nighttime work activities over the next month as a part of a large road improvement project for Kaumualii Highway between the Lihue Mill Bridge and Rice Street.
The first phase of the waterline tie-in work, conducted through project contractor Kiewit Infrastructure West, Co., began on Tuesday and will continue until Feb. 28.
The second phase, according to a public notice from the state Department of Transportation’s Highways Division, will continue on March 1 and end on March 30.
To comply with noise requirements set by the state Department of Health’s Indoor and Radiological Health branch for the project last year, nighttime work may take place from midnight to 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight on weekdays, according to HDOT.
Work on Saturdays may be conducted from midnight to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight, and midnight to midnight on Sundays.
No work, according to HDOT, will be conducted on holidays.
The work is part of a long-range HDOT project to improve traffic flow on Kaumualii Highway between Rice and Uahi Streets.
Improvements planned for the area include include rehabilitating the existing Lihue Mill Bridge to carry two lanes of eastbound traffic and constructing a new bridge span on the mauka side to carry two lanes of westbound traffic.
