Holbrook ‘Hobey’ Wichman Goodale
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Hobey Goodale was raised on Kauai by his parents at Pihanakalani in Wailua and by his grandparents at Kalapaki in Nawiliwili, where he enjoyed fishing, surfing, hunting and horseback riding.
He attended Iolani School on Oahu in sixth grade and boarded there until December 1941. With the onset of World War II on December 7, 1941, Hobey returned home to Kauai to work for his grandfather, Charles Rice, at Kipu Ranch. He along with many others in his class never graduated. In 1992 at the Iolani School Commencement Ceremony, Hobey, and other members of his class, who had become leaders in Hawaii politics and business were finally awarded their high school diplomas. Hobey joined the Army in 1945 and was stationed on Shemeya Island in the Aleutians. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He entered Menlo Jr. College in 1947 and while at home during that summer, met Nancy Sloggett. They were married on June 25, 1948. Hobey and Nancy moved to Kipu where Hobey became the ranch foreman. They remained the love of each other’s life for 60 years. They had four children; David “Kawika” Goodale (Sarah Purcell) of Hanalei, Kathy Richardson (Richie) of Lihue, Joan Evans (Randy) of Santa Barbara and Dr. Richard Goodale (Karen) of Kilauea; seven grandchildren; Matthew Goodale (Meghan), Dylan Goodale, Wayne Richardson, Katie Richardson, Anthony Evans, Juliet Evans and Ian Goodale. Nancy passed away in 2008.
Hobey left Kipu Ranch in 1962; and having bought his grandfather’s shares at Garden Island Motors, became its president. In 1998, he sold the dealership and retired.
Hobey was a member of the Hawaii Cattleman’s Association. In 1961, Governor William Quinn appointed Hobey to represent Kauai on the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture Board, where he served through 1963. He became a member of the Kauai Rotary Club in 1960 and was a Paul Harris Fellow many times over. Hobey served on the Kauai-Niihau Burial Council for 6 years. He served as the treasurer of the Lihue Public Cemetery for many years. He became a member of the National Tropical Botanical Garden in 1972, was elected a trustee in 1984 and served as the chair of the Finance Committee for many years. He stepped down as a Trustee of NTBG in 2013 and was elected Trustee Emeritus. Hobey was involved with the Kauai Museum from its beginning in 1960, was a Trustee and the President of the Board of Trustees from 2011-2013. He was a passionate member of St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church and was instrumental in the building of their new church and administration building. His interest and concern for the education of Kauai’s youth, led to his involvement in island School, where he served on the Board of Directors from 1987-present.
Hobey was inducted into the Niihau-Kauai Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also honored as a Living Treasure by the Kauai Museum in 2002.
Hobey was passionate about sports; especially surfing, fishing, hunting, polo, baseball and golf. He and his friends surfed at Kalapaki long before surfing became popular. He played club baseball on Kauai, and in college. He coached Little League Baseball for many years. Later, golf became a significant part of both Nancy’s and Hobey’s lives. They were members of local golf clubs and traveled the world to play golf. A highlight for both was when they joined People to People Golf and were in the first group of Americans to go to China to play in 1987. He continued to play regularly until 2011.
In addition to Hobey’s four children and seven grandchildren, he is also survived by brothers Charles “Charlie” Wichman (Jeanne), Frederick “Bruce” Wichman (Lorita), and numerous nieces, nephews, uncle and cousins.
At the urging of his wife Nancy and his children, he wrote many short remembrance stories of his life on Kauai. Many of these stories were published in The Garden Island during 2010 as part of the 50 year celebration of The Kauai Museum. In 2011 he published a book, “Hobey”, which told his life story. This book may be found at the Kauai Museum gift shop.
A Memorial Service will be held on February 24, 2014 at the Lihue Public Cemetery at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hobey’s memory to the Kauai Museum, Island School or the National Tropical Botanical Garden.
