Hopefully, the weather will be a little friendlier Thursday when the Nawiliwili Yacht Club hosts the second of its six-race Shakedown Series.
“It was very wet and with fluky winds,” said Doug Tiffany, the vice commodore of the NYC, who crews aboard Bonjolea II. “Bonjolea II took the lead at the start of the first race of the series, and never relinquished it.”
Bonjolea II finished the 2.11-mile course in five- to 10-knot winds out of the north on an elapsed sail to 27 minutes, correcting to a PHRF 28 minutes, 46 seconds for top honors, rebounding from the opening day three-race series where she finished with a second, third, and fourth place in the races.
Speedy, one of three Olson 30 boats in the race, filled in the second place, crossing on a 29:42 elapsed sail and correcting to a PHRF 29:42.
What followed was a dogfight for third through fifth places between Papaau, Express 27, OZone — the Olson 30 who swept the three-race opening series — and Fast Company, another Olson 30.
Papaau was the slowest of the three boats, crossing on a 31:19 elapsed sail, but the PHRF correction put her in third place at 29:59 PHRF, just 14 seconds below Speedy.
Ahead of the three-boat pack, Ozone slipped across on a 31:05 elapsed sail, just 1 second ahead of Fast Company who sounded the finishing horn at 31:06.
The close finish put Ozone in fourth place at 31:08 PHRF, 1 second ahead of Fast Company at 31:09 PHRF.
Mapuana, a Wells 35 designed by local boat maker Gene Wells, finished at 32:50 elapsed, 31:23 PHRF, and Trinity, an F-28 Trimaran, rounded out the field on a 33:44 elapsed sail, 38:24 PHRF.
Mapuana also corrected to 27:51 CLUB for top honors in that class, followed by Trinity correcting to 29:23 CLUB for runner up honors.
During the opening day races, OZone made short work of the three courses, capturing top honors on sails of 20:03 elapsed, correcting to 20:05 PHRF for the first race and coming in tops at 18:50 elapsed, 18:52 PHRF, 46:12 elapsed, 46:16 PHRF, for the second and third races, respectively.
Weather conditions were on the other side of the spectrum with light winds of five to 10 knots out of the north-northeast, a light swell and no rain.
“It was a pretty slow, but fun series of races,” Tiffany said. “Papaau, Fast Company and Bonjolea II finished with a second place apiece, and Trinity was crewed by just two crew.”
Tiffany said there were no protests filed and no collisions, all boats finishing without breaking anything.
The public is invited to view the second race of the NYC Shakedown Series on Thursday when the first flags fly at 5 p.m. at the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty area.
