LIHUE — A sleepy driver knocked out a fire hydrant and sent a geyser of water skyward early Monday morning in front of Walmart.
According to the county news service, Kauai police and firefighters responded to Kuhio Highway fronting Walmart at around 1:30 a.m.
A 20-year-old Lihue man was heading north on the highway and reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle then went off the road and struck a traffic sign, a utility pole and a fire hydrant directly in front of the box store.
The driver reported minor injuries to his left arm but refused medical treatment. No citations were issued and no arrests were made.
Personnel from the Department of Water responded and shut off the water to the hydrant. Traffic remained open in both directions while emergency personnel responded and the vehicle was towed from the scene.
