LIHUE — The public is invited to attend a free community forum about a national grassroots campaign calling for an amendment against corporate personhood.
The event, hosted by Kauai Alliance for Peace and Social Justice, is at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Lihue Neighborhood Center, 3354 Eono St.
David Cobb, the 2004 Green Party presidential candidate and spokesperson for Democracy Unlimited, and Move To Amend, is the guest speaker.
The recent U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections. Cobb, an attorney and National Leadership Member for Move to Amend, will help local residents understand the history behind the recent decision and how they can work to abolish corporate personhood and reestablish a government of, by, and for the people.
“Corporate personhood is not an inconsequential legal technicality,” Cobb stated in a press release. “The Supreme Court ruled that a corporation was a ‘legal person’ with 14th Amendment protections before they granted full personhood to African-Americans, immigrants, natives or women.”
More than 328,000 people have signed an online petition supporting a constitutional amendment at www.MoveToAmend.org.
