KALAHEO — Division 1, or youth in the third and fourth grade, and Division 2, or youth in the fifth and sixth grade basketball games, continue Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Papalina, taking a 14-6 win over Team Lihue Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, will open the day against Kaulupono, who suffered a 7-12 loss to Team Central Tuesday in Kalaheo during the county’s youth basketball league.
Tipoff for the game is 9 a.m. followed by the Division I Kapaa girls team taking on the home Hanakila team starting at 10 a.m.
Team Lihue will meet Team Central in an 11 a.m. showdown in the third Division I contest.
The host Hanakila, Division 2, opens the afternoon series against Kapaa A starting at noon, and the series closes when the Sonics D2 boys tangle against Team Lihue A starting at 1 p.m.
Papalina, with Eric Burkman in the coaches’ box, jumped out to a 7-2 lead over Kaulupono Tuesday night in Kalaheo, fueled by a trey launched from outside the three-point arc, from Carlos Lang.
This was just one of two treys for Papalina, the second bomb coming in the fifth period when Ridge Serraon launched one.
Serraon secured high-point honors in the Papalina 14-6 victory with five points, including the fifth-period three-ball. Games are six periods long. Lang added his trey with Ethan Smith getting a first period bucket, Kaleb Kester nailing a fifth-period bucket, and Hans Burkman was 2-for-2 at the free throw line in the fifth period.
Mikey Manera, Lai Naihe and Michael Questin each had a field goal for Team Lihue.
Matthew Rivera bucketed three field goals, including two in the second half, to lead Team Central to its 12-7 win against Kaulupono.
Garbed in flashy uniforms from the Philippines, Team Central, with Chad Plowman in the coaches’ corner, got three points from Keylan Calapatia, a pair from Joshua Rego and a digit from A.J. Galiza.
Kaulupono, led by the enthusiastic Charles Brown in the box, and making its first appearance in the county’s youth basketball league with a boys’ team, poured in six points in the second half, led by Jason Shipley who ended up leading the Westside team’s scoring with three points.
Khreston Nihi added a pair with Ganon Lauer and Hekili Dizol each contributing a point.
Shiloh Louis-Kaneakua fired five points, Toshi Cox shot four points, and Rickey Ralston fired three points to lead Hanamaulu to its 17-0 shutout over Kapaa in the only Division 2 game played Tuesday in Kalaheo.
Brandson Hirokane and Chayce Garcia each scored a pair with a digit from Leleand Keale rounding out the victory.
Bryan Doo leads the Kapaa B team which saw the efforts of team members Tyler Hawthorne, Mason Doo, and Tim Blum come up empty at the charity stripe.
Due to the Presidents’ Day holiday, no games will be played Monday.
