Tommy Rita, donning his Detroit Lions cap, had a surprise when he showed up Saturday for the alumni football at Vidinha Stadium.
He got to meet Roy Gerala, a place kicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bob Cazet, the head of Alumni Football USA, said Roy heads up the program in New Mexico, but the conversation quickly switched to The Steel Curtain.
Russell Wellington, one of the three great announcers for the game, said Roy went to Kalani High School on Oahu before moving on to New Mexico State, and eventually the National Football League.
Billy DeCosta (I’m going to have his pix on my refrigerator, too) did a great job filling in for Russell, and among the fans, Dennis Okihara said he came to support the Kapaa food booth.
Last week, Mike Martinez did microphone duties.
Kudos to Coach Kyle Linoz and the Waimea alumni (they have great supporter wear!) for taking the series for the second time in as many years!
