The Kapaa High School boys soccer team earned the top seed when the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Boys Soccer State Championships, Division II open Thursday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
Under the direction of new head coach Gary Hudson, the Warrior men, earning the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship with a one-loss record, will attempt to defend its Division II title when the quarterfinals open on Oahu.
Kapaa, under the coaching of Kevin Cram, took the Division II title during the 2012-2013 tournament, the second time Kapaa has held the crown since Division II play started in 2008.
Kapaa’s first ascension to the throne came in 2009 when the Warriors were crowned state champions in Division II with Cram leading the team.
With its top seeding, Kapaa will open the tournament against Honokaa at 3 p.m. Thursday.
The Hawaii Preparatory Academy holds the No. 2 seed, opening against Leilehua. The No. 3 seed goes to Seabury Hall who opens against the Mid-Pacific Institute.
The Roosevelt Rough Riders hold the No. 4 seed and will open against Liberty Christian.
The championship game will be at 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Iolani Red Raiders earned the top seed for Division I followed by Baldwin of the Maui Interscholastic League getting the No. 2 seed.
Kaiser holds the No. 3 seed and Kealakehe is seeded No. 4.
