Four Niihau teachers received their bachelor degrees in education from UH-Manoa this past December. Bettylou Kanahele, Cindy Kaohelaulii, Lulubelle Kelley and Laurie Pahulehua began their educational journey in 2003 when they participated in KCC’s Summer Bridge Program. Since Niihau has no access to the Internet, telephone or cable, classes were videotaped and the tapes sent to Niihau via helicopter. Congratulations to these proud new teachers!

Ten members of Na Liko Aloha o Ka Hui Hula (KCC’s Hula Club) will travel to the island of Suo-Oshima, Japan in June to perform at various locales. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to share their cultural knowledge while also learning about a different culture. Suo-Oshima is one of Kauai’s sister cities. The students will need to raise substantial funds for the trip, so they are asking for Kauai’s support to make this dream a reality.
