WAIPIO — Both Kapaa High School and Kauai High School’s girls soccer teams lost in the second round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II girls soccer state tournament on Thursday. No. 3 seed Kauai lost to PAC-5 of Honolulu, 3-1. Kapaa lost to No. 1 seed Mid-Pacific Institute of Honolulu, 3-0.
PAC-5 3, Kauai 1
Red Raiders head coach Kevin Devitt said his team had difficulities with the opponent’s speed of play.
“We played OK. The other team just beat us to the ball … we weren’t ready for it,” he said in a phone interview. “We’ve been trying to get the girls to the ball faster … The kids in the (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) play much faster.”
Anaiah Christensen scored Kauai’s only goal at the ninth minute of the match.
Devitt said his team had at least seven or eight chances but couldn’t put the shots on frame.
“We had a really good chance in the first 30 seconds (of the game) in the box. Just couldn’t convert it,” he said.
PAC-5’s Jamie Saito then went on to score all three of her team’s goals.
Kauai will play Leilehua of Honolulu in the consolation bracket at 3 p.m. today.
Devitt said his team was a little upset about the loss but will put its best foot forward for this game.
“Every game is different,” he said. “Now we know and we’ll adjust for it. We should be OK.”
MPI 3, Kapaa 0
Warrriors head coach Kevin Cram said MPI’s speed of play was much faster than Honokaa of the Big Island, whom the team defeated in the first round.
“They were disappointed. We felt we could compete with any of the teams,” he said in a phone interview. “We did create a couple of opportunities (to score) … We weren’t dominated. We just didn’t convert.”
MPI’s goals were scored by Janaye Shepherd, Coby Yoshimura and Kayla Watanabe.
Kapaa will play Kalaheo of Oahu in the consolation bracket at 3 p.m. today.
“They’ll bounce back and be ready to go,” Cram said. “I think we can compete well with Kalaheo with our style.”
