LIHUE — “I’m staying at a place, so everything I take, I must carry,” said Melanie Moure Monday at the Catholic Charities offices in Lihue, holding an armful of items.
“I would love to have some of these infant things for the baby to come,” Moure said. “Where to keep them?”
Moure was shopping through the assortment of clothing and other items at the Catholic Charities offices, seeking pieces that would give her the greatest use in the limited amount she could carry.
Jessie Oruche, a volunteer working at the Catholic Charities, said the items were provided by the Lihue Airport.
“We have been fortunate enough to receive a large donation of abandoned items from the airport, and would like to give these items away to those in need in our community,” Oruche said.
A sample of items includes crutches, canes, wheelchairs, dog carrier, infant seats, glasses, shoes and books.
There is a catch.
“We need to have everything gone by Thursday,” Oruche said. “We need the space open by Thursday so people are welcome to come by and pick what they need according to the guidelines.”
Guidelines for the distribution include a maximum of eight items for a single individual, and a maximum of six items for each member of a family living in the same household. Additionally, there is a limit of one higher-value item per household.
Oruche said there are several items set aside for those who are homeless.
Finally, while supplies last, there is a free stuffed animal for every child, or adult, who asks for one.
