“Seattle is going to win,” said Jason Warter of Seattle on Sunday a few minutes before kickoff for the big game. “That’s it.”
Warter was one of the first customers at the special tailgate party at Rob’s Good Times Grill in the Rice Shopping Center coinciding with the National Football League’s 48th Super Bowl.
“They’re the first customers,” said Lolly Silverman. “They get Seattle beads.”
And Warter was right. Seattle went on to beat the Denver Broncos 43-8.
But fans from both teams, as well as just football fans, flocked to local bars and restaurants to catch the big game, which was expected to be one of the most-watched television events in American history.
Woody and Shannon Medford of Lihue were enjoying the warmth of the Sunday morning sunshine while watching the crew of Santa Maria Style Ribs set up outside the bar and grill before the game.
“We came here two days ago to choose our seats,” said Shannon, wearing a special Broncos Conference Championship shirt. “We’re originally from Denver, so we are rooting for the Broncos.”
Jared Diaz of the Santa Maria Ribs said they were preparing a special menu of chili, ribs and barbecued corn for the game.
“We’re from Cowboy country,” Diaz said. “We try to make all the big events so people can enjoy the food.”
Tori Aki, an employee with JJ’s Broiler in the Anchor Cove Shopping Center, created a special hairpiece, a plumeria-inspired flower featuring the colors of both Seattle and Denver, before heading to work at the Nawiliwili bar and steakhouse.
