LIHUE — Kellan Wortman scored two goals for Island School to force a 2-2 stalemate with the Kauai Red Raiders Wednesday afternoon at the Island School facility.
Kauai coach Mark Brandeburg moved Jared Okayama up from defense and the maneuver yielded the first goal when Okayama found the net at the 20-minute mark.
Coming off a 1-0 halftime lead, Kauai faced a tie in the 50th minute when Wortman scored the first of his two goals.
Flanked by wingman A.J. Ort, Wortman charged Kauai goalkeeper Alec Martin-King. As the three pairs of legs met outside the goalmouth, the ball squirted toward the net, Wortman signaling the goal with his celebration.
Kauai team captain Kaiea Iwasaki headed a Scrappy Garma corner kick to break the tie, 2-1, in favor of the Red Raiders.
As the clock wound down, Wortman took a cross from the deep pocket and kicked the ball in for the stalemate.
With the tie, Island School travels to Hanapepe for a match against Waimea Friday at 6 p.m.
The match was mutually agreed on by the coaches and will the final game of the season for both teams.
Kauai will travel to Vidinha Stadium Saturday to meet the Kapaa Warriors, who swept its series against Waimea, 1-0, for the junior varsity boys, and 5-0 for the varsity team.
Jordan Layaoen scored the sole goal for the Kapaa JV win.
Daniel Alonzo scored two goals to lead the Kapaa varsity win, one in each half as the Warriors built on its 2-0 halftime lead to net three goals in the second half.
Eljay Camat found the net from the right side pocket at the 21st minute to break a defensive slugfest in the cold evening air punctuated by passing showers.
Six minutes later, Alonzo got the first of his two goals on a head-to-head challenge with Bradley Ceballos, the Waimea goalkeeper.
At the 45th minute, Keaton Schneider charged the goalmouth for his goal, followed by Justin Franklin finding the net two minutes later.
Alonzo capped the win in the 60th minute with his second goal.
Kapaa, defending KIF champions, will face off against Kauai Saturday with the JV boys starting at 10 a.m. followed by the varsity boys starting at 11:45 a.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
