WAIMEA — Friday night was the first time the Waimea High School Project Grad committee sold food at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls basketball game, said Anna Henriques.
“We have 145 seniors at Waimea High School,” Henriques, the 2014 Waimea Project Grad chair, said. “Today, we distributed the registration forms and I’m hoping we have a lot of them being returned.”
Participation is optional in the annual graduation night safe celebration that takes place following commencement ceremonies on May 23.
“Student registration is $25 for the entire night of drug-, alcohol-, and tobacco-free celebrating with their friends,” Henriques said. “Project Grad has been working to fundraise since the start of school to help these students stay safe with their friends.”
Ms. Joyce Evens, a teacher at Waimea High School, said Project Grad programs work to ensure that all of the students are able to enjoy the event if they choose.
“There are some fabulous, unsung heroes who work so hard on this grassroots effort to give each Waimea High School graduating class a memorable and safe graduation night,” said Jean Souza, a parent, in an email.
Helen Percival, one of the volunteers, Friday night, said right now, the group is about halfway through its fundraising efforts with a goal of about $30,000 by the end of February.
“We are really hoping we’ll need less than that amount, but we want to give each Waimea High School graduating class member a memorable and safe graduation night,” Henriques added. “Whatever amount is left over will definitely be seed money for the 2015 Waimea Project Grad committee.”
While the volunteers filled orders for basketball fans, Henriques said there are several other fundraising events for the Waimea Project Grad, including the Waimea Alumni and Friends Foundation Carnival Feb. 8 where the group will be offering a Hawaiian plate featuring lau lau, lomi salmon, rice and a dessert from 5 p.m. until closing.
Tickets for the WAFF carnival were also among the items being offered at the basketball game.
