Hui O Na Makua Hookahi O Kauai is a nonprofit group on Kauai that provides food to single parent families and helps single parents become self sufficient. This group was started by one woman, Marilyn Mohler, in 2000. Marilyn is a lifelong Kauai resident and Kapaa High School graduate from the class of 1971. Marilyn was raised by a single mother, along with her seven siblings, because her father died when she was a young child. She knows firsthand how difficult it can be for single parents to provide food and other necessities for their children.
As a former recipient of Marilyn’s hui I know what a blessing Marilyn is to the single parents of Kauai. She often provided food for my children when times were hard. My children are now grown and on their own which allows me an opportunity to give back to this worthy group as a member of the board of directors for Hui O Na Makua Hookahi O Kauai. Marilyn has structured this hui in such a way that single parents are able to help one another. It is Marilyn’s grassroots efforts, along with a few volunteers, that provided food to more than 550 people in 2012.
As 2013 came to an end our funding was very low and Marilyn considered closing the hui. Thanks to two recent donations we have decided to continue the hui which services so many people and strives to ensure no child on Kauai is hungry and without food. We want to publicly acknowledge and offer a heartfelt thank you to Lawrence Bowman Family Foundation, who has donated to our hui in the past and recently donated $5,000 as well as a classmate of Marilyn’s, Beatrice Lemke, who is another Kapaa High School alumni from the class of 1971. She referred our hui to German Benevolent Society of Honolulu and they donated $2,000. It is the donations of individuals who are aware of Marilyn’s efforts to feed Kauai’s children for 13 years that enable us to continue servicing families in need.
Thank you to these two donors and everyone who helps Hui O Na Makua Ho’okahi O Kauai provide food and self sufficiency to the single parent families of Kauai. And a big thank you to Marilyn Mohler for all she has done for my family and the thousands of Kauai residents she has helped throughout the past 13 years.
