PUHI — Island School team captain Madison Moore lofted a late free kick to pull the Voyagers to a 1-1 stalemate with Kapaa Wednesday at the Island School campus.
Kapaa, playing one defender on Moore through the first half, relied on its depth to keep her out of the goal.
Cassie Wilson worked the wing for Kapaa and moved the ball into potential scoring position through most of the first half. Her efforts were contained by the Voyagers’ goalkeeper, Kelly Kay, as well as defenders Katy Davidson, Ally Pascual and Irie Driscoll.
One of those drives bore fruit in the 14th minute when Wilson crossed the ball to Kanani Colburn waiting on the leftside for the shot past Kay.
Kailana Kaiminaauao dogged the potentially dangerous Moore, relying on her midfield to assist in defense.
The tactic worked, but coming off a 1-0 halftime edge, the Warriors gave up the margin when Moore lofted a free kick in the 56th minute, the ball soaring to the upper left corner over the Kapaa defenders.
Colburn and Alanna Bauman drew yellow cards for their intense efforts in the strongly contested defensive matchup.
Kapaa is in second place by two points over Island School.
“The tie didn’t help anyone,” said Kapaa coach Kevin Cram. “A win would definitely have helped, but there is another round left, and we definitely want to be in the play-in game for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, Division II.”
Results from the Island School boys’ match as well as the varsity matches from the Kauai and Waimea matches will appear in the Friday edition of The Garden Island due to press deadlines and game schedules.
