HANAPEPE — The Kauai High School and Kapaa High School soccer teams swept its series ending Thursday with the junior varsity games at Hanapepe Stadium.
Waimea girls JV, after being defeated through the first round, opened the second round with its first score when Athena Abadilla found the net in heavy traffic during the first 10 minutes of play, Thursday night at Hanapepe Stadium.
Not only was this Waimea JV’s first score of the season, it gave the JV Menehune wahine a 1-0 lead for a brief period before Kapaa answered the goal.
Playing an eight-person format, Kapaa’s Sophia Morrow answered the Abadilla goal in the 11th minute by heading in a corner kick for the 1-1 deadlock, which stood for nearly 10 minutes.
Kapaa’s Kaisha Davis Caberto handled stopper chores, keeping the Menehune forwards at bay during the first half which ended on a 3-1 margin after Rukiyah Walker found the net on the first of her two goals in the 19th minute. Asher Mangold took a cross from Vanessa Rubel in the 27th minute for the halftime math.
Sara Morimoto, finishing with two goals along with Walker, opened the second half in the 37th minute, following that goal with another in the 43rd minute after taking a cross from Mangold.
Anuhea Huddy marked the scoreboard in the 42nd minute with a goal, and Walker closed the book in the 50th minute after scoring on a cross from Caberto.
Throughout the night, Waimea JV girls got strong performances from Iolani Malama, the goalkeeper who twarted several key shots, including an attempt by Eryn Yamashiro on a cross from Caberto in the final two minutes of play.
Midfield back Kelsie Shimatsu was instrumental in power kicks to move the ball into Warrior territory.
The strong Waimea defensive posture carried over to the JV boys game where Cody Taniguchi stopped nearly all Warrior attempts at the goal, Taniguchi’s efforts being supplemented by Noah Alejandro in the goalbox.
Despite strong play from its midfield and forwards, led in part by Jayson Hawthorne playing both sides of the ball, and Tanner Fredericksen, Kapaa was limited to a single goal from Jacob Russell which came early in the match.
Megan Devin had the sole score for the varsity girls game, Wednesday to lead Kapaa to its 1-0 edge over the Menehune in a game where Kapaa coach Kevin Cram was issued a misconduct card or “improperly equipping his players.”
Daniel Alonzo and Noah LaMadrid did the honors for the Kapaa varsity boys who left with a 2-1 win over Waimea, the Menehune getting its score from Isaiah Duldulao.
Dino Pabre, the Kauai High School athletic director, said the Red Raider soccer teams also fared well at Vidinha Stadium, the girls taking a 4-3 edge over Island School, and the boys prevailing 2-1 over the Voyagers.
“Madison Moore scored all three Island School goals,” Pabre said. “Kauai worked in the last two minutes of play to break the 3-3 tie and win the match after the Raiders’ scorer took a rebound and lofted it into the upper right corner.”
Kauai coach Kevin Devitt, in an email, noted the outstanding play by Island School’s Moore.
Kauai girls got its scores from Kaylee Tamura, Wailana Gandeza, Janae Souza and Caitlyn Cantorna.
Kalen Celebrado and Kaiea Iwasaki did the scoring honors for the Kauai boys, AJ Ort, sometimes filling in as the Voyagers’ goalkeeper, getting the score to keep Island School close.
Island School will next host Waimea Saturday with the varsity girls kicking off at 10 a.m. followed by the boys game starting at noon.
Kapaa will host Kauai at Vidinha Stadium Saturday with the JV girls starting at 10 a.m., the JV boys starting at 11:45 a.m., the varsity girls starting at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity boys starting at 3 p.m.
