WAILUA — Valri Kriner was having the birthday party of her life on Sunday.
Kriner had a birthday song sung to her by Larry Rivera, Kauai composer and entertainer, while she enjoyed the company of people who came from all over to paint at the painting party hosted by Patrick Ching.
Jean Dolan, wiping a tear of happiness from her eye, of Orange County, N.Y., and enjoying the festivities with her husband Joe, and son J.D. Dolan of Koloa, said she was in the best place because her son was with them.
“This is the best painting party, ever,” said artist Ching who hosted the painting party with Robert Miller of Mazzarella Gallery and Rivera.
Experienced artists and newbies mingled at the afternoon event.
“I’ve never held a paintbrush, ever,” said Diana Howard of Danville, Calif. “I like the bakery here, and while on the way, saw the sign which said there was going to be music. Now, I’m just trying to do something on the wall the best I can.”
Ken Kriner, Valri’s husband, took on a more difficult task of trying to do a small painting based on a tortoise photo he had taken in Poipu, squeezed in a corner of the gallery which was filled with aspiring painters working on their individual projects under the canopy of Rivera’s music.
“We’re just here to help people enjoy painting and get started on their own projects,” Miller, owner of the gallery, said.
Miller, a graduate of Kapaa High School in 1989, said the gallery is named to honor his mother, Marilyn Miller, and her maiden name of Mazzarella.
