LIHUE – County officials are encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas trees.
“Over the years, our residents have been great about recycling their Christmas trees and I encourage everyone to continue to do so. This enables us to divert tons of green waste from the landfill, and generate compost to fertilize other trees and plants,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “A big mahalo goes out to everyone for helping to keep Kauai sustainable.”
Christmas trees are being accepted for recycling daily except on holidays at the green waste drop-off areas of the Hanalei, Hanapepe, Kapaa and Lihue transfer stations, 9:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and the Kekaha Landfill, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A drop-off point for the trees is also located on the west side of the main entrance to Kauai Nursery and Landscaping on Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi seven days a week.
The trees must be bare and free of flocking, tinsel and ornaments when they are brought to the recycling locations.
