WAILUA — An unidentified man died this morning on an embankment off Kuamoo Road in Wailua just before the roadway transitions to Loop Road. He died several hours after he veered off the roadway, hit a tree and then fell roughly 30 feet onto the embankment.
A motorcyclist who was in the area at around 8:30 a.m. said he heard cries for help coming from the embankment and went to check. The decedent, who was alive at the time, told the motorcyclist that he had been stuck in his vehicle for several hours.
The motorcyclist went to where he was able to get cell phone reception and notified authorities. When he returned to the scene, he called out to the man, but there was no response.
Shortly afterward, firefighters from the Kapaa station arrived. They rappelled down to the scene and found that the driver had died.
The firefighters then secured the vehicle with the help of a tow truck driver who used a hoist on his truck. They also cleared the area for the extrication.
Rescue specialists also responded and provided assistance.
Police officers closed Kuamoo Road/Loop Road for approximately four hours while emergency responders performed the extrication and an investigation was conducted.
