KAPAA — County of Kauai’s newest council member, Mason K. Chock, Sr. will be the featured speaker at the Wailua-Kapaa Neighborhood Association’s meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kapaa Library. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Elected in mid-November by the County Council with a 4-2 vote, Chock fills the seat vacated by former Vice Chairwoman Nadine Nakamura who resigned Oct. 31 to become Kauai County managing director.
He also cast the vote that provided a council majority to override Mayor Bernard Carvalho’s veto of Bill 2491– establishing buffer zones and public disclosure of restricted-use pesticides and genetically modified crops.
“If I’ve been given the opportunity to make a difference in the health of a child’s life, I’m going to take it,” he said.
Chock believes in seeking solutions through a collaborative process and he hopes to improve opportunities for community engagement in government.
He is a Kamehameha and UH Manoa graduate and a former Kauai County Fireman. He served as the executive director for the nonprofit Leadership Kauai and is currently president of Kupu a‘e/Kauai Team Challenge. He is also involved in a new project, Malama Huleia, to eradicate mangrove from Huleia Stream in Nawiliwili.
