LIHUE — About 30 Cub Scouts from Pack 148, sponsored by the Lihue Christian Church, scoured the neighborhood of the Lihue Town Estates for its annual food drive Sunday benefiting the Kauai Independent Food Bank.
“We were supposed to do it last week, but it was raining so bad, we moved it,” said April Taguiam, minding the command post at the Ace Hardware parking lot. “We have about 50 active Cub Scouts in the pack, and about 30 of them are walking the streets with their parents for about an hour.”
Crystal Rosa, assistant cubmaster, said the pack always canvasses the Lihue Town Estate because the residents are generous.
“The residents know the Cub Scouts are coming at this time of the year,” Rosa said. “A lot of people said they were waiting last week and had their boxes of contributions ready.”
Kelvin Moniz, interim director of KIFB, thanked the parents for their contribution to the food drive.
“I was a Boy Scout in Kaumakani, and I know how much work it is for parents to take the children out on a food drive,” Moniz said. “The drives are successful because of the hard work put in by parents and the leaders.”
He estimated the collection amassed in the hour of canvassing about 200 pounds of food.
“These foods go directly to people,” Moniz said.
He said the KIFB is winding down its Holiday Food and Fund drive, which will run through Tuesday, and people wanting to contribute can drop off non-perishable canned goods or food at any of the fire stations around the island or at the KIFB facility in Nawiliwili.
