Christmas is just a day away, but there are still many who need help and there is still time to pitch in.
Sandy and her family live in an old vehicle because that is all they can afford at this time.
She quit her job when she gave birth to her twins. Her husband has only been able to find temporary employment.
Their finances are so limited, they won’t even have enough money to have a nice Christmas dinner. Rusty and Lanett are each 1 year old and could really use some clothes, books and toys for Christmas.
Suzie and her family live in a small tent on a farm in Kilauea because that is all they can afford. She had to quit her job when she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Her husband can only find temporary employment. Their finances are so limited, they can’t afford a Christmas dinner, either.
Roy is now 2 years old and could really use clothes and toys for Christmas. The parents don’t have transportation and could also use bus passes.
Sandy and Suzie are two of around 600 adults and children who will receive assistance through the Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund. Social service agencies submitted about 275 cases for those seeking help.
The Garden Island encourages individuals, families, clubs, schools and businesses to rally behind the Christmas Fund. Each donated dollar is recorded, accounted for and spent wisely.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members through gift certificates.
Only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI, 96766.
An anonymous benefactor through the Hawaii Community Foundation is offering a two-to-one match for every donation to the fund up to $10,000.
Organizers say the community has been generous with its donations this year.
