POIPU — More than 50 angels appeared in various guises Friday at the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club in Poipu.
Donna Rivera, director of services, and Pearl Kaohelaulii-Butacan, housekeeping manager, were joined by Jenni Saguid and Cheree Rapozo in making final adjustments to associate-produced stockings on display in the resort’s conference room.
“This is the 11th year we’re doing the program which was started by Cathy Veatch, the director of services who has since retired from the Waiohai,” said Saguid, Waiohai administrative assistant.
Armed with requests from The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program and other community agency requests, Waiohai associates acquire the requested items and decorate stockings for judging before the agencies pick up the completed stockings in time for Christmas.
“Every year the stockings get larger and more extravagant,” Saguid said. “A lot of love, care and thought go into the creation of these beautiful stockings and picking the winners for this annual contest gets more difficult each year.”
In addition to the associate-produced stockings, the resort provides the supplies and materials to create gift boxes for families in need.
Boxes usually contain blankets, linen and other household necessities and toiletries.
This year, recipients include The Salvation Army Angel Tree and Prison Ministries, the Kauai Economic Opportunity, the Department of Human Services and the Community Service for the Developmentally Disabled Kauai.
Rapozo and Michelle Pascual were announced as the winner’s of the 2013 contest, but each associate who worked on a stocking earned angel wings, neatly tucked beneath their uniforms.
