KAPAA — A costly foul with 16 ticks remaining in the game cost the Kapaa High School Warriors Thursday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Trailing for most the game against Hawaii Baptist Academy at the Warrior Basketball Tournament, Kapaa rallied in the final two minutes after coming to within a digit, coming out of a time out with a rousing cheer.
Brison Nacapuy put back a second effort with less than a minute left to tie the match, 50-50, before the physical defensive game ate up the seconds.
Following the foul, HBA’s Ty Minatoya dropped a charity pair for the 52-50 that held up for the win.
Throughout the game, Kapaa stayed close, the lead not reaching 10 points at any one time.
BT Hosaka set the pace for HBA, finishing with 15 points. Danton Tominaga scored his game-total nine points in the second period. Matthew Kishaba, finished with eight points, Jordan Kauwe finished with six and John Killaugh was perfect on the free throw line with four points.
James Stevens led Kapaa with 13 points, including a late-game bucket which pulled Kapaa to within two points. Marion Cudiamat followed, adding eight points with Matt Cummings and Wheeler Batol each ending with six points. Keliikoa Baclayon netted the sole three-ball with Nacapuy, Joshua Blaine, Aladin Denmark, Dave Aguinaldo, Bryden Salvador, Mosese Fafita and Rusty Ahloo-Brewer each coming up with pairs.
During the junior varsity games where Kapaa split its forces, Kauai JV took a 59-36 win over Kapaa White behind Johnson McCormack’s 20 points and Lanakila Wilson added 15 points, including a pair of fourth quarter treys.
Kapaa White got 22 points from Junard Mata, Bernie Calvan added 13 points and Tristen Hawelu-Inanod added seven points.
Kapaa Green JV redeemed its opening loss with a 64-38 victory over the Waimea JV in the second match of the night, rolling behind a dozen points from Kai Maroney and 10 points each from Daniel Yabes and Saxsen Shura. Jarren Casem finished with eight points to round out the Warrior scoring leaders.
Reymund Mendoza set the bar for the Menehune JV, finishing with 16 points, including four treys. Kelly Ragasa added nine points to round out the Waimea leaders.
The Kapaa Warriors tournament continues through Saturday.
