LIHUE — As people scurried about in search of Black Friday deals, no one noticed the ominous clouds overhead at the Kukui Grove Center.
The clouds are ahead of a weather front approaching from the west and moving east, according to the National Weather Service.
Accompanying the front, a high probability of heavy showers and thunderstorms will affect Kauai and its surrounding waters through Sunday.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Kauai and Niihau effective midnight Friday and continuing through Sunday.
A flash flood watch means conditions may develop from the bands of heavy showers with thunderstorms which lead to flash flooding.
Because of the holiday weekend, people planning outdoor activities, including hiking and camping, should pay close attention to the latest weather forecasts.
In addition to the weather, county officials report dangerous ocean conditions on the North Shore with strong rip currents and waves with 15- to 20-foot faces.
These conditions have led Ocean Safety Bureau to close all beaches north of the Hanalei Pavilion from Hanalei to Kee Beach.
