Kauai Pop Warner Football League, for the first time, honored its scholar-athletes and their parents/guardians at a scholarship dinner at the Hanamaulu Cafe and Teahouse.
Millie Ah Hee, scholastic coordinator for the KPWFL, said a dozen student-athlete applications have been forwarded to the Wescon Region from the tackle and cheer divisions for recognition and scholastic placement in the National Pop Warner First and Second teams.
Ah Hee said the dozen Kauai applicants will be competing for honors with hundreds of other participants from other Pop Warner conferences throughout the Western Region states.
To qualify, student-athletes must have maintained a Grade Point Average of 96 percent, or higher, for the past school year, Ah Hee said.
During the dinner leading to the final Shrine Games and the Harold Naumu Bowl Saturday, KPWFL officials recognized the achievements of its student-athletes with certificates of achievements. Those honored included:
• Sixth-grade, Ryddych Contrades and Junelle Kayla Tangalin of the Kapaa Eagles.
• Seventh-grade, Moani Felix-Keamoai, Jacelyn Ragragola-Palacio and Kaitlin Santos of the Kekaha Titans.
• Eighth-grade, Corey Agena and Anna Broyles of the Hanapepe Colts; Rachel Saustaita of the Kekaha Titans, Keana Lovell-Obatake, Drewan Pigao, Jaykob Nakaahiki Young of the Lihue Patriots and Wentworth Rivera of the Kapaa Eagles.
Saturday’s Shrine games, benefiting the Shriners’ Hospital, open with the East and West Mighty Mite teams followed by the Koloa Junior Peewee and the Lihue Junior Midgets hosting off-island teams in the Harold Naumu Bowl at Vidinha Stadium.
