Shoe trees will be springing up beginning on Sunday, said Edie Ignacio Neumiller of the Zonta Club of Kauai.
Running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the YWCA’s Women’s Expo, Pink Sunday, a tree will appear at the Kauai Veterans Center.
Another display will sprout at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On Nov. 29, marking the 16 Days of Activisim Against Gender Violence, another tree will sprout from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. “We cannot and must not ignore the fact that violence against women and girls is still pervasive in all kinds of countries and societies,” said Lynn McKenzie, president of Zonta International, in a release.
“One in three girls are impacted during their lifetime. It’s in our backyard.”
A shoe tree is like a Christmas Tree, but decorated with shoes as a symbolic gesture, or reminder, for a certain cause.
McKenzie said Zonta International has been committed to its prevention and eradication of violence for many years.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.
With nearly 1,200 clubs in Zonta International spread through 65 countries, participation in the local communities supports Zonta Says NO, a campaign to raise awareness of and increase actions to end violence against women and girls around the world through service and advocacy.
