LIHUE — Filipino residents of Kauai could only watch and pray as the largest ever recorded Category 5 Super Typhoon Haiyan hit hard at Guiuan in Samar province.
The Diocesan Congress of Filipino Catholic Clubs held its state convention Friday at the Honolulu Pagoda Hotel. The Kauai delegation, led by president Annabelle Portugal, will submit a resolution to establish a hurricane relief fund drive.
Samar is the same province that experienced a Magnitude 6.5 earthquake in August 2012.
“They haven’t recovered from that yet and now they have this calamity,” said Oscar Portugal, adding that many Kauai Filipinos come from Samar province.
Vergie Cruzada is president of the Samar Association on Kauai but could not be reached for comment.ld in Kauai.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent will being their relief efforts once the Philippine Red Cross issues an international appeal for assistance, she said. The Philippine government must approves outside volunteers and support to enter the country.
