WAILUA — The morning commuters had a little surprise Thursday with a cow grazing along Kuhio Highway.
The full-grown cow managed to get out of its fenced in area in Wailua and wandered along the Mauka-side of Kuhio Highway just south of the Wailua Bridge.
A man seemed intent on removing the cow around 7:45 a.m. and a few minutes later two highway trucks put themselves between the cow and traffic. The cow ran back into the brush with all the excitement and disappeared onto Hawaiian Homelands property.
A Kauai Police Department squad stopped momentarily at the scene at around 8 a.m. and traffic came to a halt. However, the cow had run off into the brush and no report was filed, according to a county spokesperson.
The Kauai Cattleman’s Association could not identify the rancher in that area. The Kauai Office of Hawaiian Homelands did not respond to requests to identify the cow’s owner.
