LIHUE — The public is invited to view five artists from Japan, Maui and Kauai turn 300-pound blocks of ice into artwork on Friday.
The 5th annual International Holiday Ice Sculpting Expo heralds the start of the holiday season at the Kukui Grove Center and will feature Kauai’s master carver, Wallace Nishimura, Kazuo Yamanoue and Sean Kaumeheiwa of Maui, and Kenji Kagei and Mitsuyuki from Japan.
“The Kukui Grove annual ice sculpting event is our special way of kicking off the holiday season,” said Jonell Kaohelaulii, the mall’s marketing manager. “Once we see the ice chips and shavings fly, we know the holidays are here!”
The master ice carvers will start their work at 6 p.m. before heading to Maui where they will compete for prize money during the International Ice Sculpting Exhibition and Competition Saturday.
The completed ice sculptures will be on display throughout the remainder of the evening, which will include the weekly Aloha Friday entertainment with the Kapaa Middle School Choir and Ukulele Band starting at 7 p.m. under the direction of Mary Lardizabal.
The appearance of the award-winning Kapaa Middle School choir and ukulele band serves as a preview for the Color Relay Extravaganza fundraiser that takes place at the Kukui Grove Center and the Puakea Golf Course on Nov. 16.
More information and vendor applications for the day-long event are available by visiting www.kmscolorrelay.weebly.com or asking Lardizabal during her appearance Friday night.
The Color Relay Extravaganza starts at 7 a.m. with the Holiday Craft Fair running from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 16.
Other notable events include Natural Harmony appearing Nov. 22 as part of Aloha Friday entertainment and the Barbizon Performing Arts School Registration and Information from Nov. 22 – 24.
The HMSA Health Fair will fill the food court area from 10 a.m. and on Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving, the mall will host its Black Friday Party until midnight featuring the Keiki Show with the Showtime Characters at 11 a.m., and Tamatea Nui O Kauai taking the stage at 7 p.m. as part of Aloha Friday entertainment.
The 20th Annual Kauai Christmas Parade officially welcomes the holidays at the mall on Nov. 30, starting at 4 p.m.
