LIHUE — A Texas man suffered a heart attack and died while hiking on the Hanakapiai Trail Friday, authorities said Monday.
Police have identified the 68-year-old hiker as Edward Rishebarger of Spring Branch, Texas.
At around 4:20 p.m. Friday, a lifeguard radioed Kauai Police Dispatch about a male hiker who apparently suffered a heart attack about one mile from the trailhead. According to a county news release, the victim complained of shortness of breath and eventually fainted. Bystanders performed CPR on the victim until emergency responders arrived.
The victim was transported to Samuel Mahelona Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The man had an existing heart condition and is believed to have suffered a heart attack, a press release said.
