Ian Luis of the Kauai High School boys bowling team was the sole Kauai Interscholastic Federation bowler to medal at the 2013 Billy Tees Hawaii High School Athletic Association bowling championships on Oahu.
Played on Thursday and Friday, Luis, the consistent strong bowler for the Kauai High School boys finished the two-day competition in 10th overall with a 1,664 (182,149, 205, 536-1,664) pinfall over three sessions at the Hickam Air Force Base Bowling Center.
Luis’ performance led the Kauai High School boys to a seventh-place finish in the teams competition, the Red Raiders coming back strong on the final day with an 808 pinfall toward its 2,256 total and 7,266 pinfall.
Chase Ueno, the KIF individualist from Waimea High School, opening with a pair of 200 games (200, 202) on Thursday, dropped to a 179 on the final round leading to his 1,615 pinfall.
Other members on the Kauai boys bowling team included senior Derman Alao (125, -, 157, 282-1,331), freshman Christian Iloreta (132, 145, 136, 413-1,208), freshman Brandon Agas (148, 140, -, 288-1,035), and senior Reggie Mones (155, 131, 164, 450-886). Kauai substitute Kelii Alcos rolled seven games for a 1,142 pinfall (-, 141, 146, 287)
On the girls’ lanes, Kapaa’s Angelika Questin led the Warrior girls team to a ninth-place finish on a 1,949 total and 6,210 pinfall.
Questin, a senior at Kapaa, finished with a 1,442 pinfall (166, 170, 156, 492) bowling nine games over two days. Her final landed her 29th overall.
Selena Perez-Suniga, the KIF individualist from Waimea High School, finished 48th overall on a 1,344 pinfall (158, 144, 132, 434).
Other members on the Kapaa girls team included senior Kristen Yam (127, 126, 131, 384-1,092), junior Keisha Aki (128, 117, 135, 380-957), junior Amanda Thayer (83, -, 124, 207-790) and junior Hazel Jarquio (99, 117, -, 216-775). Kapaa substitute Annie Ballesteros rolled five games for a 551 pinfall (-, 110, 105, 215).
