Kapaa has the largest local population on Kauai, as well as the largest grouping of small businesses, all of which rely to some extent of the work that the Kapaa Business Association does. As a not-for-profit organization of volunteers from some of the Kapaa small businesses, KBA tackles the big issues that affect the Eastside of Kauai, if not the whole of Kauai:
• Traffic: Our traffic committee keeps a constant eye on conditions and makes many traffic suggestions that affect change in our area, including the first roundabout on Kauai, and the four-lane widening of Kuhio Highway.
• Crime: As a founding member of the Mayor’s Crime Task Force, we bring together all aspects of society and business to decrease crime on Kauai, working with our Legislature, police department, county and prosecuting attorneys, and the County Council and administration. We encourage everyone to work harder to reduce crime on Kauai, but at the same time work to help people affected by crime – including rehabilitated criminals.
• Entertainment: Our 17th annual Coconut Festival was last weekend and as always, was a smash hit. It brought thousands of people to Kapaa that weekend — overflowing on the night to our other more regular event, the Old Town Kapaa 1st Saturday event, which has become the “IN” place to be on those first Saturday nights every month.
• Eastside development: For many years now the KBA has been pioneering the Eastside development plan, which looks at traffic flow, bypass routes around Kapaa and town beautification.
All of that must be paying off as Kapaa was recently rewarded with the title of “One of the Prettiest Towns in America.”
