NAWILIWILI — Bonjolea II crossed the line first, but settled for fourth place in the PHRF class Thursday at Nawiliwili Harbor.
The tradewinds returned and the fleet of seven boats plowed through the chop generated by 12 to 15-knot winds out of the East as the Nawiliwili Yacht Club hosted the Gene Wells Memorial Series, Race No. 4.
The winds’ return following last week’s non-wind situation saw Papaau cross early, having to double back on the start while Bonjolea II crept up on the leaders.
Holding first near the opening turn, Bonjolea II crossed first in 56 minutes, 6 seconds, but corrected to 59:47 PHRF for fourth place.
Fast Company, jumping out early at the start, overcame problems with its spinnaker, and following a headsail change, crossed at 57:50, correcting to 57:55 PHRF for top honors.
OZone, always a serious contender with Fast Company, pushed across the line in third with a 58:21 elapsed sail, correcting to 58:26 PHRF and second place honors.
Following Bonjolea II, Weatherly, one of four Olson 30s in the race, crossed at 1:02:09 elapsed, correcting to 1:0-2:15 PHRF for fifth place.
She was followed by Speedy (1:04:38 elapsed, 1:04:44 PHRF) and Trinity, a trimaran, crossing at 59:46 elapsed and correcting to 1:08:02 PHRF.
Trinity also corrected to 52:34 Club for top honors in that class followed by Weatherly (58:13 Club), Speedy (58:31 Club) and Bonjolea II (58:38 Club).
The 7-race Wells Memorial Series continues Thursday at the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty wall when the first flags fly at 5 p.m.
