With the KIF volleyball and football season winding down, games between the schools are starting to have bigger implications.
Tonight in volleyball, the 4-4 Kapaa Warriors host the 5-3 Kauai High Red Raiders at Kapaa High School.
The Warriors are coming off a straight set loss against the Menehune of Waimea High School while the Red Raiders are heading into Friday’s contest winners of their last game against the Island School Voyagers.
Both teams fell in the first-half playoff rounds against the Waimea Menehune but still have a chance of playing for the overall championship if either of them are able to secure the second-half.
Friday’s meeting between the Warriors and Red Raiders is the third this season as the team’s split the first two matches.
Over at Island School, the Menehune will visit the 0-7 Voyagers for their third game between the two on the season.
The Menehune own the season series 2-0 and took out the Voyagers in straight sets in both contests.
With Waimea already owning the first-half title, the Warriors and Red Raiders are both on a short leashes and will not only have to take out the Menehune themselves, but also count on each other to win a game or two.
There are five KIF games left in the regular season including Friday’s matchups.
Both matches start with JV at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
And while Friday night will be a big night for KIF volleyball, Saturday’s game on the gridiron will also have implications as well.
Coming in to face the Kauai High Red Raiders at Vidinha Stadium is the Menehune of Waimea High.
The Red Raiders are undefeated on the season at 3-0 and are coming off a big 7-6 victory over the 2-2 Kapaa Warriors.
The Menehune, on the other hand, will be searching for their first win of the season as they sit at 0-3.
Saturday’s matchup will be huge for not only the Menehune and Red Raiders, but also the Warriors.
In their loss last weekend to the Red Raiders, the Warriors dropped to 0-2 on the season against Kauai. Kapaa only has one matchup left with the Red Raiders and need the Menehune to steal two of their remaining games against Kauai if they want a shot to play for the KIF title. Kapaa still has one game left with the Menehune and will need to win that, also.
Waimea will be hungry to get its first win of the season on the footbal field and be looking to avenge their 35-13 Sept. 13 loss against Kauai at Hanapepe Stadium.
Saturday’s game will begin with JV at noon with the varsity to follow at 2:30 p.m.
