HANAPEPE — The Hanapepe Colts swept all three of its games on Sunday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Playing in the Kauai Pop Warner Football League with just one more week remaining in the first round, the Hanapepe Colts opened its day with a win as the Junior Midgets stayed ahead of the Koloa Redskins, 26-12.
The Colts Junior Peewee followed the win with a 29-0 shutout over the Kekaha Titans JPW, and Maka Shigematsu scored a touchdown and booted the point-after to give the Colts Mitey Mite an 8-0 edge over the Kekaha Titans MM.
Shigematsu broke a 0-0 halftime deadlock in the third quarter, finding the end zone on an 8-yard run with 2:27 left and gracing the touchdown with his 2-point PAT boot.
Makoa Vanaman scored two first-quarter touchdowns and Sean Mullikin triggered the running clock with a second-quarter TD and finished with a PAT run behind Wailani Kawahalau’s 3-yard TD late in the first quarter.
Vanaman peeled off 48 yards with 6:08 left in the opening quarter, getting the point-after from Nainoa Ragragola for the 8-0 Hanapepe JPW lead.
The lead stood until the 2:17 mark of the first quarter when Kawahalu found the end zone with Mullikin adding the PAT run for the 15-0 bulge.
With no time left in the first quarter, Vanaman found the end zone on a 47-yard scoring run. Hayden Oglesby ran in the point-after for the 22-0 margin at the end of the first quarter.
With 1:09 left in the first half, Mullikin sprinted for 40 yards and Hanapepe’s final score. Ishan Ulanday added the point-after run for the 29-0 final math.
The Hanapepe Colts got two touchdowns from Noah Bermudez, a 4-yard score at the 6:30 mark and a 23-yard charge with 40 seconds left in the first quarter for the 12-0 margin after Koloa Redskins’ Kyle Bisarra blocked the Colts’ second PAT attempt.
With 48 seconds remaining in the first half, the Koloa Redskins JM scored when quarterback Elijah Asano connected with Keolalani Baclayon on an 87-yard scoring play to keep the Redskins in the game, 12-6 at the break.
Following a defensive third quarter, the JM offense mounted three scores in the final period, including a 32-yard run by Baclayon on the final play of the game.
Hanapepe Colts quarterback Lacin Montemayor ignited the offense at the 8:26 mark, keeping the pigskin for a 3-yard score and an 18-6 Colts’ lead.
Three minutes later, Noah Ruiz plucked an Asano pass and ran the ball back 49 yards, the defender also booting the PAT for the 26-6 reading.
Baclayon’s run for the Redskins at the buzzer resulted in the 26-12 final.
Earlier in the day, Koloa Redskins MM quarterback ran for a touchdown, passed for a score and booted two PATs to lead Koloa to its 30-0 shutout over the Lihue Patriots MM.
DeCosta broke open for a 41-yard touchdown at the 6:53, gracing his score with a PAT boot.
With 3:05 showing in the first quarter, Ryson Waalani found the end zone following a 49-yard run, the PAT failing for the 14-0 reading.
With just 58 ticks showing in the half, Greg Manintin reaped a 46-yard score, Joey Sams doing the point-after boot for the 22-0 Koloa lead at the break.
DeCosta iced the Koloa victory at the 7:00-mark in the third quarter, finding Kaedin Grace on an 18-yard pass play, and capping the touchdown with a PAT boot for the 30-0 final.
Keane Tibon broke a 0-0 defensive slugfest with 4:44 remaining in the game to give Lihue a 6-0 lead on his 10-yard charge to the end zone.
The Redskins answered the score with 2:03 showing in the game when Kahanu Davis found the end zone on a 5-yard run for the 6-6 final.
Sunday marks the end of the first round with five games on tap at the Hanapepe Stadium starting at 8 a.m. when the Lihue Patriots Junior Midgets go up against the Hanapepe Colts JM.
The Lihue Patriots JPW go up against the Kekaha Titans JPW in the 9:30 kickoff.
Koloa Redskins host the afternoon series against the Kapaa Eagles, with the JM squads kicking off at 11:30 a.m. followed by the JPW at 1:30 p.m. and the Mitey Mites closing out the day starting at 3:30 p.m.
