LIHUE — The Lihue Patriots are in the driver’s seat of the Junior Midget division following its 16-8 win over the Kapaa Eagles on Sunday.
But during the 5-game series hosted by the Kauai Pop Warner Football League at Vidinha Stadium, that was their only win. They dropped the Mitey Mite division game, 30-6 to the Hanapepe Colts, and lost to the Junior Peewee match 28-6 to the Colts during the day of games on the gridiron.
Earlier in the day, the Kapaa Eagles swept its series over the Kekaha Titans, posting a 26-8 win in the Mitey Mite division and shutting down the Titans JPW, 26-0.
After Kawika Na-o lit up the scoreboards with a 3-yard touchdown in the first quarter, the Eagles JPW put up two more scores in the second quarter for the 19-0 lead at the break.
Isaac Nagahisa found the end zone on a 5-yard charge at the with 4:49 showing in the half, Kahale Kaleiohi pushed for a 4-yard score.
With 3:16 left in the game, Stetson Telles-Kelekoma iced the victory on a 5-yard scoring run sealing the 26-0 final.
Damien Akita put the Titans MM on the board with 3:56 left in the first quarter with Anson Lazaro gracing the 3-yard touchdown with a successful point-after boot for the early 8-0 lead.
The Eagles MM answered, and on the final play of the first quarter, Connor Payomo found the end zone at the end of a 1-yard run, Kolu McCorriston doing the PAT boot for the 8-8 deadlock.
Kapaa surged for two touchdowns in the second period, Tyrus Alao peeling off an 18-yard score with 3:10 showing in the half and Kaikea Tandal ending the first half with an 86-yard breakout for the 20-8 Eagles lead at the half.
Following a defensive slugfest through most of the second half, Nakoa Peragine put the final score on the board after running back a pass interception 43 yards to seal the 26-8 victory.
In other action:
The Patriots exploded to lead off the day when Bryceson Abigania took the opening kickoff on a 75-yard return for score with just 15 ticks peeled off the clock. Lihue wouldn’t look back, finishing off the victory 16-8.
In other games, Chris Kanahele ran for three touchdowns to lead the Hanapepe Colts MM to a 30-6 win over the Patriots.
After peeling off a 65-yard score with 8:08 left in the first quarter and Maka Shigematsu adding the PAT boot, Kanahele marked touchdowns of 26 yards and 10 yards in the second quarter, Shigematsu getting the PAT boot following the 10-yard touchdown for a 22-0 Hanapepe lead at the half.
Lihue was finally able to find the end zone with 6:10 left in the game when Jayze Padilla ran back a fumble recovery 49 yards for the Patriots’ only score of the game.
The Hanapepe Colts completed its 2-game sweep in the JPW matchup when Makoa Vanaman ran for three touchdowns to lead the 28-6 victory.
