LIHUE — Kauai Visitors Bureau was recently honored for its work in presenting the “Kaui Hart Hemmings Day” pre-Oscar gala event to recognize “The Descendant’s” author with a media event in Los Angeles.
The Public Relations Society of America-Hawaii Chapter, presented KVB with it’s “Hawaii Koa Hammer Certificate of Excellence” during the 30th annual Koa Anvil Awards dinner at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club in Honolulu. The award was in the Media Relations and Non-Profits category.
The Koa Hammer recognizes outstanding public relations tactics that are part of a communications campaign, including research and writing. There were 10 other awards in category.
Mayor Carvalho presented Kaui Hart Hemmings with a Proclamation declaring Feb. 23, 2012 as “Kaui Hart Hemmings Day” to acknowledge her book “The Descendants” and the successful movie directed by Alexander Payne — which later went on to win Best Adapted Screenplay,” said KVB Executive Director Sue Kanoho. “We received some wonderful press on this event, which was very helpful to our island’s history with the film industry.”
The KVB event honoring Kaui Hart Hemmings was held in Beverly Hills two nights before the 84th Academy Awards on Feb. 23, 2012. It was held to honor the Oscar nominated film “The Descendants” and Hemmings, who authored the best-selling book that was used in the film adaptation.
Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. attended the pre-Oscar gala event and presented a Kaui Hart Hemmings Day proclamation to recognize her achievement in writing “a beautiful story” that featured Kauai and “authentically depicts life in Hawaii.”
“KVB has always been a great partner in helping us bring Kauai’s message to the world and insure that the visitor and film industries continue to thrive,” Carvalho said of the award.
The Descendants is a 2011 motion picture from FOX Searchlight Pictures that won the Oscar for best Screenplay by Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon and Jim Rash at the 84th Academy Awards. It was adapted from the original novel written by Hemmings. The film starrted George Clooney and won Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Actor.
