LIHUE — Everyone plays is the motto of the American Youth Soccer Organization and Saturday, nearly 600 youth took the fields between Lihue and Waimea.
Milani Pimental, registrar for AYSO Region 940, said the 2013 season for youth soccer players in the west Kauai area opened. Region 940 covers players living from Lihue west through Kekaha.
“It’s back,” she said. “AYSO has as its motto, everyone plays, and we work to try and balance the teams as best as we can.”
Pimental said Saturday’s games involved the Under 6, Under 8 and Under 10 teams. Teams older than 10-year-olds, including the Under 12 and Under 14 divisions will start its season this Saturday.
Teams in the AYSO Region 941, which covers the eastern end of Kauai from Wailua through Hanalei, started its season last weekend, with games being played at fields from Wailua through Anahola and Hanalei and Haena.
Following the regular season, the Under 10 will participate in the Friendship games on Oct. 26 at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park where teams from both AYSO Region 940 and 941 meet for a day-long soccer fest.
Teams in the Under 12 and Under 14 play off for division titles, the first two places advancing to the islandwide Will Veech soccer tournament featuring teams from Region 940 and Region 941 playing for division titles in a week-long tournament.
