Aloha! My name is Tyson Agbayani and I am your new sports writer for The Garden Island newspaper.
I was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii and I am a recent graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Growing up in Hilo, I developed a passion for playing and watching sports. All day in the gym or all day on the field, that was my life as a youth. It only seemed fitting that I would someday come full circle.
But not this quick. While filling out applications for numerous restaurants this summer, hoping to not be one of those unemployed recent graduates, I was notified by a past professor about a potential position in Kauai.
Lesson No. 1: Always be nice to your teacher.
Remembering only the red dirt that seemed to get everywhere and a small gym that my sister’s volleyball tournament took place in, I decided to take the leap.
Ten years later, I have returned to Kauai for the same reason I first visited. To watch sports.
As your new sports writer I intend to revert back to those days I spent all-day playing sports, but this time covering your local sports, teams, athletes and youth. I am eager and excited to get started and look forward to seeing you at games.
