LIHUE — A 61-year-old visitor from Germany died while hiking the Kalalau Trail Friday. County officials report the man was hiking with a group of friends when he started feeling tired and collapsed on the trail near the eight mile marker.

County officials report the man was hiking with a group of friends when he started feeling tired and collapsed on the trail near the eight mile marker.
CPR was administered to the man, but the man did not respond.
A pilot with a helicopter tour company radioed the Lihue Airport air traffic control tower to report the incident and then police dispatch was notified, according to the county.
Air-1 with Rescue 3 aboard responded at approximately 5:30 p.m. They flew to the landing zone near the eight mile marker and hiked about 1/4 mile to the scene.
The victim was placed in a Stokes litter and carried to the helicopter, and he and another hiker were flown to Princeville Airport where awaiting medics confirmed the man’s death, and police officers took over the scene.
After refueling, Air-1 returned to the Kalalau Trail and airlifted another hiker in the party to Princeville Airport.
