Sporadic passing rain showers and high tide conditions may have put a damper on some beach activities last weekend, but it did little to rain on this year’s annual Hawaii Sand Castle Art and Sculpture Festival in Hanalei.
The annual one-day festival and workshop, now in its fourth year, shattered previous attendance records as nearly 500 people in 85 teams gathered on the beach next to the Hanalei Pier for a creative day of fun.
In all, contestants were given four hours to create a sand castle or sculpture on almost any subject. New tweaks to this year’s competition included a new political statement and word carving category.
The sand art was later judged by Kauai artisans Kathy Cowen and Wayne Zebzda on several criterias, including age, artistic creativity, originality and complexity.
