LIHUE — Friday was a special day for Namaka Park, a member of the Anuenue high school football team.
“You remember me, uncle?” Park, who was walking with the help of crutches, said. “I used to play for the Koloa Pop Warner.”
Park suffered an injury to his ankle and will not be taking the field when the team from Palolo in Honolulu takes the field today.
Anuenue is one of two football teams arriving on Kauai for pre-season football games.
Friday, the Nanakuli High School junior varsity and varsity teams squared off against Kapaa High School at Vidinha Stadium.
Anuenue is scheduled to meet Waimea High School in a pre-season game today at 2 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
But Park will be limited to savoring the atmosphere of playing in a field where he formerly played as a Koloa Pop Warner player.
The Kauai Interscholastic Federation teams will be on the road next weekend when Waimea travels to the Big Island to meet Hawaii Preparatory Academy Aug. 17 at 2 p.m.
Kapaa High School will travel to Maui, taking on the Lahainaluna Lunas at the Maui War Memorial stadium in a 7 p.m. kickoff Aug. 17.
Kauai High School will be the only team at home, hosting the Kwansei High School (from Japan) in a single game starting at 7 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
