LIHUE — Pier 1 Imports will be filling the space formerly occupied by the Borders Book & Music, said Jonell Kaohelaulii, Kukui Grove Center marketing manager.
“What an advantage it is for Kukui Grove Center to have North America’s largest specialty retailer of unique decorative home furnishings and gifts as well as a locally-owned and largest sleep shop chain in Hawaii,” said Wade Lord, Kukui Grove general manager. “It’s an exciting time for Kukui Grove right now. We’re currently in talks with multiple prospective tenants, and we’re working hard to position ourselves with the right mix of shopping, dining and entertainment.”
Kaohelaulii said Sears closed its doors over the weekend, but talks are taking place to fill those spaces. The store was selling its fixtures and displays Thursday.
Pier 1 Imports will be adjacent to America’s Mattress, which opened earlier this month. The Pier 1 Imports store is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.
With the agreement of Pier 1 Imports, Kaohelaulii said that section of Kukui Grove is nearly full.
“We’re still looking for tenants to fill in the spot formerly occupied by Seattle’s Best, and the adjacent restaurant,” Kaohelaulii said.
Pier 1 Imports, originating in San Mateo, Calif. in 1962, offers a range of items including indoor and outdoor furniture, decorative accessories and gifts. Its merchandise features a unique, worldly flair.
“As a business leader, I’m delighted that these developments will improve the quality of our visitors’ shopping experience,” Lord said. “Moreover, as someone who lives on Kauai, the local boy in me could not be happier about the increase in employment opportunities for the community’s residents.”
