LIHUE — Registration forms for the 20th Annual Contractors Association of Kauai scholarship golf tournament are now available.
Registration forms for the tournament, which helps fund the CAK scholarships for Kauai students in industry-related fields of study, can be picked up at the Pro Am Golf Shop in the Rice Shopping Center, the Puakea Golf Course and the Wailua Golf Course.
The tournament, which will be contested on Aug. 10 at the Puakea Golf Course, benefits the CAK scholarship program, which awarded its 2013 scholarships to eight of Kauai’s youth during its meeting last Tuesday at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Lyle Nemeth, John Medeiros, Shaun Koide, Derek Yamane, Ryan Moura, Dade Apao, Randon Valenciano and KristiAnne Nishek shared in $11,500 in scholarship awards.
The recipient of the Hawaii Gas Award, Nemeth, is a junior civil engineering major at the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. He is the son of Lora and Victor Nemeth of Lihue.
Medeiros, the son of Kimberly and John Medeiros of Lawai, is a sophomore mechanical engineering major at the Oregon Institute of Technology, joining other Hawaii students in starting a Hawaii Club at OIT. He also belongs to a group which organized the Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Club, which designs and builds off-road vehicles.
Koide, the son of Eliza and Miles Koide of Lihue, is a senior majoring in electrical engineering at the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. He is the recipient of the Clyde Shigematsu Memorial Scholarship.
The Payton Bryan-Chung Memorial Scholarship was presented to Yamane, a freshman environmental engineering major at the University of Oregon. A graduate of Kapaa High School, Yamane, the son of Valerie and Michael Yamane of Kapaa, was a member of the football and outrigger canoe paddling teams.
The son of Paige and Robert Moura of Eleele, Ryan graduated from the Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama campus, where he was a member of the wrestling and surf teams. The recipient of the Hal Martin Memorial Scholarship heads to Colorado Mesa University with an eye toward majoring in mechanical engineering.
Apao is also a Kamehameha Schools 2013 graduate, heading to the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo as a civil engineering major. The son of Katherine and Dirk Apao of Lihue, Dade starred as a member of Kamehameha’s football team and on the Warriors’ track and field, specializing in the 100- and 200-meter relays.
The recipient of the Guy Matsunaga Memorial Scholarship, Randon graduated Kauai High School in May. The son of the Honorable Randal and Debbie Valenciano of Lihue, Randon was president of the Kauai High School National Honor Society, and captain of the volleyball and paddling teams. His other accomplishments include being an official with the Kauai Officials Association while working part-time at Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors Catering. He heads to Boise State University where he plans to major in civil engineering.
KristiAnne, the daughter of Laura and Jerry Nishek of Hanapepe, is a second year honor student as a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii, Hilo. The recipient of the Yasuo and Hisae Minatoya award, available only to children of CAK members, KristiAnne has her Hawaii pharmacy intern license and is president of the American Pharmacist’s Association, Hawaii Chapter as well as a charter member of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.
In addition to the scholarships, each of the recipients were presented legislative certificates on their achievements by Rep. Derek Kawakami representing State Sen. Ron Kouchi, Senate President Donna Mercado Kim, Reps. James Tokioka, Dee Morikawa and House Speaker Joe Souki.
The Contractors Association of Kauai, affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders, was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kauai.
