KALAHEO — Sister acts figured heavily in victories during the Kauai Youth Basketball Association 18 and Over women’s league Sunday.
The sister combo of Lauren and Joy Claypoole was one of the keys to the Kauai Ballers’ 34-24 win over the Meatballs in the opener at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Sisters Erin and Paige Connelly, Waimea High School alumnae, figured heavily in the Team 808’s upset win, 42-36, over the #Ballout in the nightcap.
Joining the Claypoole sisters, Jessi Aki, the Kauai Ballers’ player-coach, brought home the college experience to help lead the victory, the outside guard dropping the team’s only trey in the third quarter en route to her game-total 11 points.
Lauren Claypoole, an Island School alumna who also plays college ball, topped the scoring with 13 points, leading the team with six of the squad’s first quarter eight points.
Sister Joy Claypoole, currently an Island School student, came off the bench and did not score any points, but played strong defense on the inside, supplementing Lauren’s low posting.
Raquelle Matayoshi, a Kapaa alumna, added five points and some strong defense in the paint to the Ballers’ win. Kira Nakamura, another Warrior alumna, notched a second quarter three-ball, and a third quarter bucket from Bristy Agu rounded out the win.
Liona Hasegawa topped the Meatballs’ scoring with eight points followed by Virginia Aguilar adding four points. Robyn Hoopii-Manuel dropped a first quarter three-ball. Anna Jacinto, Sunshine Kuhlmann and Cheyanne Duarte each netted a bucket, and a digit from Jasmine Santella rounded out the effort.
Paige Connelly, graduating from Waimea High School in May, topped the Team 808 scoring with 11 points, including a first quarter trey.
Kristle Henry, a Kauai High School guard who also graduated in May, added eight points followed by Janessa Grady launching two second-half treys, a key to the Team 808 win.
Erin Connelly added a first half trey and a second half bucket along with her strong defensive hustle in the paint. Arrisa Thronas and Kelsey Cadiente each finished with four points, Kayla Perez and Kira Taylan each paired for the win.
Casey Anacleto kept #Ballout in the lead through the half before Team 808 turned things around in the third period.
Anacleto, finishing with 18 points in the game, fired off 11 of those points in the first half, including one of two three-balls for the 12-9 bulge at the end of the first period.
During the half where #Ballout held the reins, Carie Inouye and Natalie Mata, finishing with seven points in the game, each fired off a trey in the first quarter to keep #Ballout in the lead 21-20 at the break.
Elisa Inouye finished with four points, Mei-Ling Keopuhiwa and Rachael Taira each ended with pairs.
The women next take the floor Thursday night when Team 808 opens against the Kauai Ballers at 6 p.m. followed by #Ballout meeting the Meatballs in the 7 p.m. tipoff at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
