LIHUE — A Moloaa resident reported a dog attack that resulted in the death of her family pet.
According to a Kauai Police Department press release, the woman filed a complaint after her 20-pound cocker spaniel named Coco Chanel was attacked at her home on July 2.
A neighbor’s German shepherd reportedly wandered into her yard and entered her home through a sliding screen door around 4 p.m. before attacking and dragging the 9-year-old cocker spaniel onto the lanai.
The cocker spaniel suffered extensive blood loss from numerous puncture wounds, broken ribs and lacerations to the lungs. These and other internal injuries made it impossible to save the dog, according to its owner.
The owner, who declined to be identified, said she attempted to pick up her bleeding dog “but Coco bit her owner on the face,” according to a press release.
The woman’s small dog was put down by a veterinarian and the owner was treated for her injuries at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The owner’s second dog, Bella, a seven-pound bichon, was not injured in the attack.
Police have identified the owner of the German shepherd and an investigation is underway. The dog was reportedly taken voluntarily to a Kilauea kennel where the Humane Society is conducting an examination.
